ABOUT OUR CATERERS

Equinox Catering is owned by Sean and Jessica O’Connell. Although they have come to the culinary industry from different angles, both have a passion for service and amazing food.

Chef Sean O’Connell began his culinary career in the kitchens and hotels of Victoria, B.C. In 1996 Sean emerged from the Culinary Arts program at Camosun College with his Journeyman Chef’s Ticket and a basis in Traditional European Cuisine. A six-month sojourn in Mexico introduced him to exotic flavours and he developed a love for Latin American Cuisine which he incorporates into his dishes. Sean has written regular food columns for More Living and Synergy magazines. After moving to the Cowichan Valley in 1999, he worked as Chef de Partie at the Aerie Resort and Chef at the Malahat Mountain Inn before opening Equinox Café with his partner Jessica in 2005.

Jessica, a native of the international food city Montreal, developed her own food education by living "off the land" in the Kootenay mountain range of B.C. where she tended a large, communal organic garden. While raising two children in a rustic 2-room cabin on the top of a mountain, Jessica learned to make all her own breads, buns, muffins, crackers and biscuits. She hosted many large, sumptuous meals with the produce from the garden and explored ethnic cuisine. Jessica has a certificate in Vegetarian Nutrition from a Loma Linda Satellite Organization, and has explored the versatile soybean making her own soy milk and tofu.

Chef Sean has developed his personal interest in special diets, enabling him to create succulent vegetarian, vegan, raw food and ingredient-restricted meals. In 2009 Equinox Café closed their restaurant doors to focus on Catering and what has become quite obviously the true passion for both Sean and Jessica.
